Proto-punk is defined as the precursor to punk, basically what shared musical traits in line with punk before punk was punk. By that definition, David Peel & The Lower East Side isn't proto-punk. If you expand it to include bands that had a similar attitude, they could be lumped in there. The Hippie movement and the Punk movement, as different as they were, did have a lot of parallels...And you'll hear those parallels on this record...To be honest, David Peel & The Lower East Side were like a bunch of stoned hippies around a campfire singing about police brutality and weed...But I like it.
